We all know how important it is to talk about our selves and our achievements in business and marketing. It helps build social proof and helps people connect with our personal brands.
However, we all know someone who constantly talks about themselves and it gets pretty boring.
Let me share a story with you.
Back when I started out in business I didn't have a clue what I was doing. At 17 (18 if anyone asks ;)) I was running around organising club nights. But it was probably more an excuse to set up a party for me and my mates over a viable business. However, spending 100s of hours each month designing posters and flyers and putting them up in shops and takeaways all over my home town taught me alot about myself - that I could work hard. I didn't excel at school for the reason that the subjects didn't interest me. Once I found something that did, hard work came more naturally.
Eventually bigger venues recognised the hard work and approached me to help them promote events in their clubs and bars and I went on to organise some of the biggest club events in the town for the next 15 years which led me to other businesses including the ones I run today.
So, your solution to not bragging is to..
tell a great story.
Stories draw people in.
How to tell a great story?
Step 1 - Admit your imperfections. With my story I said when I started out I didn't have a clue what I was doing. For your story what was the problem you faced in the beginning?
Step 2 - What did you do to overcome it? In my case I taught myself how to develop a good work ethic.
Step 3 - What happened when you overcame it? In my case I was approached by club owners offering work and developed relationships that still benefit my business today.
Along the way you're planting little seeds containing some of your achievements. The things that by themselves would be braggadocios but when woven into a story they don't come off in such a way.
What's your story?
